The Paraphrase: Reader and writer confront each other

Citing is one of the most repetitive tasks during the academic life so when you enter the university you will hear the expressions very frequently, some in an imperative tone “mention an author”, “open quotes”, “close quotes”, doubtful ” what is the source of that quote? “, with a certain irony” it is a date and it has no page “and the most feared, issued with total certainty and conviction” you did not interpret the author “and it is from this last sentence that we will start to the central theme of this article, referring to the paraphrasing.

For many students paraphrasing is to rewrite the ideas presented by an author with their own words, ruling out that this process implies an analysis, reflection and criticism of that intervention or another voice. It is the student in his role as a reader who is confronted with the author of the text or writer and in a healthy debate they confront each other.

As a student you must take the text and scrutinize it thoroughly until you reach its essence or nature and then evaluate it, taking from it its true value or essence. Not only will you highlight the author’s point of view, but also yours, you will say what they resemble and what they differ from. Your two perspectives will grieve.

It seems a simple activity, anyone will think that there is something easier and more tasty to discuss with another and be right, even more when that other has no face, but the main problem is that you should not seem a simple nosy or snoop who freely wants to leave your opinion, it is a mandatory rule to have extensive knowledge or domain of the subject if you want to participate in the contest.


Replace some terms with their synonyms: Students mark one random word and change it for another that has the same meaning.

Alter order the sentences: Something like … the top line, low … the bottom, goes up.

Shorten its original extension: This consists in omitting some of its parts. A paragraph of six lines, is reduced to only three.

Omitting the source and year: This action consists of believing that when performing some of the previous cases not only has it been paraphrased, you also have the right to appropriate the text, that is, I said this.
